Supermarkets and Shops

Addis Ababa is not a well stocked city. Due to limitations on imports, many things are hard to find and often expensive. In addition, following the currency realignment in July 2024, there has been huge inflation. Garlic, for example, has gone from 30 Birr per kilo to 120 and many other things have increased similarly.

There are no large supermarket chains in Addis, and no main shopping malls. Rather, there are many supermarkets spread of the city and lots of little shopping malls too. Finding what you need can be quite an art work, but also labour intensive. If you need something in particular, you might have to go to 8 different places before you find it. For example, last week there was an imported milk shortage and we we had to check about 8 supermarkets before finding some milk at a branch of Bambis located far outside the city centre. I highly recommend hiring someone to do your weekly shop, or it will take you at least half a day.

What are the main supermarkets that Expats use in Addis:

  • Bambis Kazinchis – one of the best options for food although they don’t always have everything. There are also 2 other branches further outside of the city centre.
  • Friendship Supermarket – this also has food but is better for other things such as electrical goods and kitchenware.

What are some good places to buy local crafts and stuff?

  • Entoto Shops are great
  • The gift shop at Zoma Museum is great

China Market is located in the Chinese neighbourhood, you can find products that you can not find in other super market, as udon noodles, chili oil, etc etc.

Then, of course, there is Merkato. But that deserves an entire post of it’s own…. follow for more

Shopping and Markets

Addis Ababa has numerous shopping options, from modern malls to traditional markets:

• Malls: Edna Mall, Dembel City Center, and Friendship City Center offer a variety of international and local brands. These malls also house entertainment facilities like cinemas and play areas for children.

• Markets: Visit Mercato, one of the largest open-air markets in Africa, for a unique shopping experience. You can find everything from fresh produce to clothing and household items. Be prepared to haggle to get the best prices.

Knowing where to shop and how to navigate the markets will help you find everything you need and enjoy a rich shopping experience.
